Bloom Board

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Who are we designing for? Young adults (20s) experiencing daily stress from work/studies. Basic smartphone users with low tolerance for complex wellness apps. Two groups: those who journal/reflect regularly vs. those struggling with self-care habits.

What do users need? Users need to decompress after stressful days and feel emotionally supported, but struggle to find quick, effective relaxation methods that don't feel like homework.

How do they currently handle this? Currently users try various scattered approaches: scrolling social media, listening to music, journaling, or downloading wellness apps they abandon. They want simple, 2-5 minute activities they can do anywhere without setup.

Where does this happen? Mobile devices during transition moments - commuting, before bed, breaks. Often in noisy, distracting environments needing calm and connection.

When do they need this? Daily after work/school when mentally drained. Need quick relief but also consistency. Most have tried and abandoned wellness apps before.

Why does this matter? Higher goal is feeling emotionally balanced and less alone in stress. Want genuine connection and validation, not just relaxation techniques. Success means feeling understood and supported by community.

PROJECT CONTEXT

Duration: 3–4 week university course project

Team size: 3

My role:

UI Designer

Research & Interface Design

THE CHALLENGE

Current Kinder World users struggled with:

Difficulty relaxing effectively with existing features

Lack of guidance and connection in self-care journey

Need for simple, short activities that actually work

"How might we design features that guide users through simple, meaningful tasks, reduce guilt around self-care, and foster connection to support relaxation and emotional well-being?"

RESEARCH & INSIGHT

Methods: User interviews, observational research, competitor analysis

Key Findings

Users prefer simple, short relaxation activities (under 5 minutes)

Community connection significantly supports self-care motivation

Journaling and positive messaging were most effective stress relief methods

Users want guidance without feeling like "homework"

Design process

Ideation & Feature Selection

We brainstormed 3 potential features based on user insights:

Petal Progress: Gamified to-do list with mini-game rewards

Flower Pathway: 5-minute guided mindfulness sessions

Bloom Board: Community pin board for sharing and support

Why Bloom Board? Research showed users needed community connection most - existing individual-focused activities weren't addressing their core need for emotional support and validation.

Key Design Decisions

  • Visual Style: Maintained Kinder World's cozy, earthy aesthetic with hand-drawn illustrations

  • Drag-and-drop posting makes sharing feel playful, not clinical

  • One reply per note prevents overwhelming users while encouraging thoughtful responses

  • AI moderation (Zizibee) maintains safe space for vulnerable users seeking support

  • Visual customization adds personal expression and ownership

  • Timer system prevents spam while encouraging regular engagement
